After the end of the Second World War, American was controlled by politicians
who wanted to avoid another war at any cost. Rather than asserting the United
State's military power, American politicians enabled the division of the world
into free parts and communist dominated parts. The peninsula of Korea was
divided into two countries: North and South Korea. North Korea was ruled by a
Soviet-controlled communist regime, while South Korea was under USA supervision.
While the supervisory powers were supposed to withdraw from their respective
countries between 1948 and 1949, foreign politicians like Winston Churchill knew
this would never happen.
On 25 June 1950, the Communists from North Koreans invaded South Korea. South
Korea appealed to the United Nations for assistance. Fortunately, the USSR was
boycotting the UN Security Council at the time, and did not veto the request.
The UN passedA
resolution sending a military force to South Korea. The force was
predominately American with General McArthur as the Supreme Commander. There
were also substantial contributions from the UK, Canada and other Commonwealth
countries.
