Dick's Health Guide: imported drugs and the Senior Coalition's

I got angry on June 17, 2003 when I received a post card from the
so-called
"Senior Coalition" entitled PUBLIC HEALTH ALERT urging me to call my
Representative to Congress and ask him to "oppose unsafe imported
medicines."
This organization was playing with words and taking making quotes about
illegal pharmaceuticals and using them out of context. On the one hand,
no one wants "unsafe" medicine whether it is imported or made right here
in the USA. But, Americans also do not need to unilaterally support research
and development costs for worldwide medicine developments. We need
competitive
pressures on American-made pharmaceuticals (as well as
more opportunity for
citizens to sue these companies when they provide unsafe
medications.) I suspect
that the so-called Senior Coalition is a scam and is
actually supported by the
pharmaceutical industry.
American manufacturers make unsafe drugs. So do foreign manufacturers.
The FDA
slips up and approves unsafe drugs. I am sure that similar agencies
in
foreign
countries make the same types of mistakes. Without each
American having his or
her own pharmaceutical laboratory investigating the
safety of drugs on that
person, we will never be totally safe from American or
foreign drugs. All that
governments can do is to provide some level of
safety with organizations like
the FDA. IF a foreign country has an
organization like the FDA -- that makes no
more mistakes than our own FDA --
there's no reason not to be able to import
such pharmaceuticals.
I went online to find out just what this so-called Senior Coalition advocates.
In addition
to wanting Americans to continue to pay higher prices for medicines, they
want to limit
the ability of Americans to get compensation for damages done to them by the
healthcare
industry. Ironically, their reason for wanting to do this is to "save"
senior's medical costs. But,
when it comes to lower seniors health care costs with imported pharmaceuticals,
they change
their criteria, and savings are not even mentioned in the scare advertisements
sent to seniors.
I have asked the Senior Coalition to let me know if the health care industry pay
any part of the
Senior Coalition's expenses. I will post their response here.
