Cancer killed my Mom. She was a registered nurse who learned all there was to
learn about the causes and cures of cancer. My interest in the topic was reignited
in May 1998, with talks of cures of rodents
and other advances in finding cures, and an article about the World's Most Beautiful
People who came together in April to join the fight
against breast cancer. Click here for

Doctors urged
the Italian government in July, 1998, to stop free distribution of "Di Bella's
cocktail", a "miracle" cancer cure.

It appears that cloning may be one
answer to finding a permanent cure for cancer. by making possible organ farms for
transplants and offering new ways to make valuable drugs.
The world's largest cancer conference started on May 15, 1998, with 20,000 doctors
discussing breakthroughs they hope will lead to a cure for the killer disease.
Ricka Powers,
a cancer victim pushed for patients' rights, at Bill Clinton's May 1998 "drive for
patients." She explained her case. She felt the lump in her breast three
years ago and went to the doctor, only to be sent home with a clean bill of health.
It was hard for her to get a proper diagnosis and treatment for breast cancer.

Brain Cancer
news report on May, 14, 1998 said, "a genetic
mutation ... (was found) ... that makes it even harder to treat a type of
brain cancer that usually kills patients within a year after diagnosis. The mutation could
explain why cisplatin, a drug used to treat the brain cancer known as glioma, does not
always work well. (Researchers) looked at a mutation in a gene known as epidermal
growth factor receptor. EGFR is an oncogene, a gene (that) promote(s) the growth of tumors
... by interfering with apoptosis, the ... "programmed cell suicide" that is
supposed to keep damaged cells from becoming cancerous."

On May 20, 1998 I encountered a story that suggested smoking, "one of the
biggest causes of cancer and heart disease, may actually help reduce the risk of breast
cancer in some women ... (because it) ... reduces by 50% the risk of developing breast
cancer in women who have a rare genetic mutation that can lead to the disease. The
mutation, in the genes BRCA1 and BRCA2, affects on average one in 250 women."

Aspirin may
be able to "starve" out colon cancer in much the same way as highly
publicized experimental drugs cut off the blood supply to tumors in mice, according to a
1998 report by a team at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn.
A
widely used stool screening for colon cancer often gives false alarms because it
detects blood from elsewhere in the digestive tract, such as ulcers, according to a 1998
study done by Duke University and the University of California on 248 people who had
positive readings on the fecal occult blood test.
