This page provides a quick overview of the contributions of Judaism to civilization.  Perhaps the largest contribution to civilization has been in ethics and religion.  Christianity and Islamic teachings are rooted in the the Old Testament.  The Ten Commandments are also the foundation of many of the Western world's laws.  It is certainly logical to accept the fact that the ten commandments (whether those of Judaism or Christianity) play a role in America's Constitution and laws. Jews played a role in the Discovery of America, http://www.us-israel.org/jsource/Judaism/columbus.html.  The Jews who helped Columbus in Western Europe's discovery of America include  Roderigo De Triana, the sailor who was the first to sight land; Luis De Torres, Columbus's Interpreter; Maestre Bernal, as Physician; Roderigo Sanchez De Segovia, Queen Isabel's Inspector;  Marco, a Surgeon and another sailor, Alfonso De La Calle.

Aaron Lopez was one such Jew.  Mr. Lopez "owned over one hundred ships including both coastal and ocean going and gave them all to the service of America.

Known as "The Merchant Prince of New England" he had come from Portugal to Newport, achieved financial success and a respected standing in the community. He laid the cornerstone for Touro Synagogue and he founded Leicester Academy.
